What Thickness Should My Fire Hearth Be?
The thickness of a fire hearth can vary depending on several factors, including the type of material used, the size and weight of the hearth, and local building codes or regulations. Here are some general guidelines:
- Stone hearths installed directly onto concrete floors are typically 20 - 30mm. Thicker hearths may be required for larger or heavier fireplaces or stoves.
- Tile or brick hearths: Tile or brick hearths are often constructed by laying multiple layers of tiles or bricks. Each layer can be around 20mm thick. The total thickness of the hearth will depend on the number of layers used.
- If there is an existing concrete or brick plinth the hearth will need to be boxed and lipped to cover the existing, this is where risers are attached to the edge of the hearth at the required height to raise the stone. See our boxing and lipping blog for further details
